Welcome! With the New Year, affirmations may be fresh on your mind. Whether you are an affirmation lover or skeptic, this post is for you!

Do you love affirmations? Me too!

Are you a bit skeptical that affirmations actually work? I’ve been there as well.

To the affirmation lovers- this will enhance your current practice.

To the skeptics- this might just be what will bring you a connection to affirmations, like it did for me!

Our words are soooo powerful. Because of this power, the way we phrase affirmations (and anything else) is very important.

Affirmation basics teaches us how crucial it is to phrase affirmations in positive language, around what we WANT, instead of phrasing it around what we don’t want. (Ex: “I am wealthy” vs “I am not broke”) Here’s a tweak that encourages the positive phrasing while also creating a deeper sense of ownership and connection, which strengthens the energetic frequency between you and the affirmation.

If you currently phrase your affirmations with the traditional format of, “I am ______.” (healthy, wealthy, in love, punctual…) Try this instead –

Replace just “I am” with “I am someone who”. That’s it!

Here are some examples:

  • Instead of “I am punctual”, try “I am someone who is punctual and always on time”.  (Fun fact- that one is what helped me mostly overcome chronic tardiness and ADHD time-blindness! I had been saying “I am punctual” for a very long time without much improvement, then huge improvements started happening once I applied my little tweak)
  • Instead of “I am wealthy”, try, “I am someone who has endless wealth”, or “I am someone who experiences financial freedom and abundance always”.
  • Instead of “I am healthy”, try, “I am someone who constantly experiences healthy vitality in all ways”, or “I am someone who takes steps daily to improve my health”. (This is a fun one to get very specific with in regards to individual habit goals you may have)
  • Instead of “I am in love”, try “I am someone who loves in accordance with my highest good and divine timing”.

Feel free to get creative and instead of saying “someone” replace it with something more specifically identifiable like “a woman”, “a man”, “a divine being”, “a child of God”, “a queen”, “a warrior”, “a badass”, “an amazing human”…you get the idea!

This tweak doesn’t only apply to “I am” affirmations. It can also apply to “I want”, “I need to”, “I can”, “I feel”, etc statements.

Here are some examples:

  • Instead of “I want to exercise daily”, try “I am someone who exercises daily”. (Getting more specific on this one is great. I recently started saying, “I am someone who practices Tai Chi daily.” And I really have done it every day since I started!)
  • Instead of “I need to apply moisturizer morning and night”, try “I am someone who applies moisturizer morning and night”. (Yep – that’s another one I am currently repeating to myself. I say it when I look at my moisturizer sitting on the counter in an effort to be more consistent with my moisturizing habit, and it’s working wonders!)
  • Instead of “I can do hard things”, try “I am someone who can do hard things”.
  • Instead of “I feel happy”, try “I am someone who feels happy”.

I have found that I am inclined to take more actionable steps towards what I want by phrasing affirmations this way. In a way it turns the focus to me being the type of person I want to be and cultivating habits I want to embody, instead of being a passive observer wishing for things to happen to me. What are your thoughts?

This New Year is the perfect time to pick 1 or 2 of your favorite affirmations and apply this small tweak and see what happens! You can jot them down with one of my favorite pens or pencils in a journal such as this or this

Let me know how this new practice feels or if you would like some support around wording your own affirmations or statements.

It’s worth noting that I provide customized affirmations and a Wellness Enrichment Menu as a part of any of the sessions I offer.

🎊Blessings and Happy New Year!
